GIANNI VERSACE: POP, POWER & THE ART OF RECOGNITION

Last winter, I visited the Gianni Versace retrospective at The Arches London Bridge—an extraordinary exhibition bringing together more than 450 pieces, many of which had never before been exhibited in the United Kingdom.

Walking through an exhibition of this scale is always an experience. For me, however, there is another pleasure entirely: recognition.

Among the pieces on display, I immediately recognized a blazer rendered in a striking purple-and-black diamond pattern, punctuated with richly colored brocade.

It was unmistakably Versace.

The pattern, color, ornamentation, and unapologetic confidence captured an era when fashion embraced spectacle—a period of pop culture, glamour, excess, celebrity, and power that defined so much of the visual language of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

And I knew the textile for another reason.

FROM THE EXHIBITION TO THE ERICA MARQUEZ ARCHIVE

A dress in the same distinctive design is currently held within the Erica Marquez collection.

This is one of the things I find most fascinating about collecting archival fashion. A garment can exist quietly in a private wardrobe for decades, and then suddenly you encounter its counterpart in an exhibition thousands of miles away.

The context changes.

What was once simply a beautiful dress becomes part of a much larger conversation about a designer, a collection, a period, and the cultural moment from which it emerged.

That is the pleasure of collecting fashion: understanding not only what something is, but where it belongs in the story.
